On starting something new, comparing myself to strangers on the internet, and trying to enjoy the ride.
Well, here we are. I officially have a website, social media accounts, and approximately 47 new things to overthink. For real guys, I can’t even sleep I’m so wired with ideas and quuestions.
Welcome to Life in Fine Form—a name that sounds considerably more polished than the process of bringing it to life.
When I decided to turn my lifelong love of decorating, design, and beautiful things into something more, I imagined it would be a fun little creative outlet. I'd share things I loved, connect with people who appreciated pretty spaces, and maybe inspire someone along the way.
Simple enough, right?
As it turns out, launching a website and building a social media presence involves a surprising amount of technology, decision-making, second-guessing, and Googling things I probably should have learned years ago.
I've changed my mind about fonts, colors, layouts, and approximately everything else more times than I'd care to admit. I've spent an unreasonable amount of time trying to understand algorithms, engagement, and why a perfectly lovely Instagram post sometimes seems to be shown to approximately four people.
Erm, two of whom may be related to me.
And then there's the comparison.
Stupid comparison. Always trying to steal my joy.
Everyone Else Seems to Have It Figured Out
Have you seen how talented people are on social media?
There are creators with breathtaking homes, impeccable photography, perfectly styled coffee tables, and quite literally, MILLIONS of followers. Their content is beautiful, their branding is seamless, and they somehow manage to make creating an entire online business look as effortless as fluffing a throw pillow.
And
If I'm being particularly vulnerable, there are moments when I feel like I don't quite belong.
I'm not a professional interior designer. I'm not a twenty-something content creator who instinctively understands Instagram. I have an entirely separate professional career that I love, and I'm squeezing this new adventure into the spaces around an already full life.
Sometimes I look around this enormous online world and wonder what I could possibly contribute that isn't already being done—and done beautifully—by someone else.
But then I remind myself of something.
There's Room for More Than One Beautiful Thing
One of the unexpected challenges of starting something new in midlife is remembering that being a beginner is not the same thing as being bad at something.
I'm accustomed to feeling competent in my professional life. I've spent years developing expertise, building confidence, and knowing what I'm doing.
And now? I'm learning how to make Instagram Reels.
It's character-building.
I'm also reminding myself that comparing my beginning to someone else's established success is a particularly effective way to take the joy out of something I started specifically because it brings me joy.
So Here's What I'm Trying to Remember
I don't need a million followers to enjoy sharing something beautiful.
I don't need a perfectly styled home to appreciate good design.
I don't need to understand every algorithm, master every platform, or turn every creative idea into a business strategy.
And I certainly don't need to become someone else to belong here.
What I do need is to keep showing up, experimenting, learning, and remembering why I started.
Because the truth is, I really do love this stuff.
I love discovering a beautiful piece of furniture that looks far more expensive than it is. I love imagining how a room could feel completely different with a few thoughtful changes. I love the thrill of finding something lovely at an unexpectedly good price.
And I love the possibility that someone else might find a little inspiration or joy in something I share.
That's enough reason to keep going.
A Work in Progress (With Excellent Taste)
So, if you're following along, you should probably know that this little corner of the internet is very much under construction.
But I'm beginning to think that's part of the fun.
After all, I'm not trying to build someone else's version of a beautiful life. I'm trying to enjoy creating my own.
And maybe that's what Life in Fine Form is really about.
Not having everything perfectly arranged, but finding beauty in the process.
And not allowing comparison to steal the pleasure of doing something simply because you love it.
So here's to starting before we're ready, learning as we go, and laughing at ourselves along the way.
I hope you learn to build your version of a beautiful life, too.
And if you happen to know how the Instagram algorithm works, please get in touch.
I'm all ears. 🤍
With love and a slightly concerning number of open browser tabs,
Kate
